Tips on Choosing a Travel Rewards Credit Card
by John Ross
One of the most popular type of credit cards right now are travel rewards credit
cards. These credit cards offer you a variety of travel rewards such as airline miles,
cruises, hotel stays, car rentals or free admission to theme parks. These credit
cards are great for anyone who is a frequent flier or is planning a vacation. Here are
a few tips you should look at when comparing travel reward credit card.
Bonus Miles
Many credit card companies offer you bonus miles after you make your first purchase
with their card. These bonuses range from 5,000 to 15,000 miles which will put you
well on your way to getting a free airline ticket. Many card companies are also
offering double points when you make purchases at certain establishments such as
restaurants, supermarkets, drugstores and gas stations. Be sure to read the terms
and conditions of the credit card to see if they offer these great incentives.
Restrictions
When comparing travel reward credit cards it is important to take a look at what
restrictions they may have. Some credit cards will only let you redeem your airline
miles with one particular airline. Other credit cards allow you to use your airline miles
with any airline with no black out dates. Do the miles ever expire? This is another
thing to look into when comparing travel reward cards. Many of these cards do not
have expiration dates on airline miles that you earn, but they may expiration dates on
the bonus miles that you receive when signing up for the card.
Annual Fees
Most travel reward credit cards do come with an annual fee. This fee may range from
as little as $20 to as high as $150 a year. This could wipe out any reward benefit if
you don't use your credit card a lot. When looking for a travel reward card don't
necessarily look for a card with the lowest fee because that card probably offers the
fewest rewards. Cards that offer a higher fee tend to offer better rewards such as
requiring less points for redeeming trips or giving you double points on your
purchases. Some credit card companies may offer the first year fee free so that is
something to consider.
